The Client: Roche Innovation Center Zurich.
The Artist: Tanja Bürgelin-Arslan is an award-winning artist, and has been a member of frontofbicycle Gallery since 2016. She can capture the attention of all viewers through the diversity of her artwork, spanning a multitude of mediums that attracts widespread acclaim.
The Introduction: In 2017, frontofbicycle Gallery introduced Tanja to their client at Roche who looked to commission a piece of artwork, to crown their newly constructed office building in Schlieren.
The Brief: To create a piece of art that was both in keeping with their new space but importantly reflected their current innovation focus in "Cancer Immunotherapy". This was where "Wings of Hope" took shape.
The Artwork: "WINGS OF HOPE": Taking the form of an antibody. The artwork consists of organic materials, two species of wood; maple, and oak to offer a stronger contrast. Including the base, it reaches 284 cm tall.
The sculpture was constructed from thousands of individual nodes and pegs, akin to the process by which amino acids come together to form an antibody structure. Using engineered stained sections to emphasize special features; the white elements represent the carbohydrate chain and blue elements the antigen-binding regions.
The Journey: Creating a piece of art is a science in itself, and the journey to create something innovative required time, patience and hard work. A considerable amount of this was invested during the planning phase to accurately identify the form and structure of the art piece. With this blueprint in mind and foreseeing the challenge in bringing the structural shape to the idea, Tanja enlisted the help of an architect. His name David Muspach, the inventor of the building blocks used in bringing to life Tanja's design. After two years in the making, "Wings of Hope" was finally installed in Roche Innovation Center Zurich, to the delight and pleasure of its employees.
We wish to congratulate Tanja and all involved in providing a magnificent, timeless piece and thank our colleagues for believing in frontofbicycle Gallery during our initial introductory meeting.
